New Baseball Season 2019

I’m back. It’s a new baseball season. Lots of moves and great players signing with mega deals or extensions and making a huge impact on their teams early in the season. Bryce Harper hit a homer in his third game; Machado is 3 for 11 and made an amazing catch down the third base foul line. Jacob DeGrom went 6 innings, 5 hits, 10 SOs and no runs. Robinson Cano hit a homer in his first at-bat in his Mets debut. Somehow, just somehow, the Mets might have a good season with a 2-0 start, which now means they’re the best team in baseball!! (In typical style, that didn’t last long.) Harper’s cleats show Philly pride even though he wants the trophy to go to the nation’s capital. This season I’ll be starting at 100^th place and go to the front of the class to make it more interesting.

100. Insane rookie slugger Vladimir Guerro Jr., Vladimir Sr.’s son, obviously has got some genes from his daddy, except junior can hit more bombs. His minors stats don’t really show it, but if you were around any baseball news or social media, you would know about this kid’s power.  But, in 2018, in the minors, through four teams and leagues he bopped 20 homers and 78 RBIs. He finished with a mind-blowing 37 BBs and 38 SOs. He finished with an average of .381 and an OBP of .437. His career is only going up and potentially he could be hitting 40-110. Just because he’s a rookie and hasn’t even made his Opening Day team, I think he’s good where he is.

99. Jose Abreu is up next, the 32-year-old first baseman is trying to offensively hold the team together with some rookie help after the team failed to sign Manny Machado. He didn’t get much time to evolve after making his MLB debut when he was 27, but he did win Rookie of the Year. The two-time Silver Slugger hit only 22 homers, 132 hits and drove in 78 in 128 games, all four were career lows. This early/late in his career I think his main focus should be to take quality ABs and making hard contact with the ball to later drive it. I think this man will pull it together and lead his team to a better season with the help of Yoan Moncada, Eloy Jiminez and Tim Anderson. I think he deserves to be a few places higher.

98. Next is Charlie Morton, he had a good year last year with the Astros but I know why they didn’t sign him back, this man’s control is all over the place, 16 HBP, most in AL and 64 walks. He earned an All-Star spot with a 10.8 strikeouts per 9 innings, which is pretty good. He gave up 130 hits and gave up 18 homers, eighteen, WOW. He had a career low ERA which was 3.13, heh-heh. He also had the most wins in his career. I think Charlie is going to have a worse season than last, he is getting older and his statistics are going run wise, like ERA, even though he is below the MLB ERA average, his ERA is going up. He will still be productive for his team with Chris Archer. I think he’s good where he is.

97. A couple of years back, Madison Bumgarner was Cy Young caliber but there was always Max Scherzer and Kershaw and Arrieta, but, he was always a thorn in the side when he was pitching. He had a 3.26 ERA when he was 28, not his best season, not one he’d want to remember. He’s always been the best pitcher in the Giants organization, even when Johnny Cueto was there. He hasn’t allowed many homers, he gave up 14 homers. He walked 43 players and hit only five. He had limited time on the mound, 21 games and about 130 innings. In his Opening Day debut he had 7 innings, 5 hits, 2 runs and 9 Ks. I think he might have a good year and bring his team up a smidge. I think he deserves to be in the high 80s.

96. Good ol’ traditional centerfielder Jackie Bradley Jr., you know one of those, some power, insane fielder and has speed. He knows how to get on and produce runs to help his World Series winning team to score. He’s not a big power guy but he got 111 hits last year and 33 of those were doubles, I got you on the calculations: about 30% of his hits were doubles, which is 0.1 percent less than Alex Bregman, 2018 doubles leader if the number was rounded – the same for both. As I said, he’s not a power guy, but 13 homers and 59 RBIs isn’t 1 homer and 7 RBIs. He scored 76 runs and stole 17 bases. Now, if I were to give some advice to pitchers, even though they probably already know that, pitch him high and in or very low and in. I think he should go to the mid-70’s.

Now, the news. New season, new hopes for the Mets. The Mets are up a great start, I know that’s what they did last year but they got Edwin Diaz, an insane closer and two new hitters in Jed Lowrie and Robinson Cano. A rookie insane slugger who can hit XBHs for days, Pete Alonso, so I just have a feeling. I learned that Yoenis Cespedes is the 7^th highest paid player in baseball and what is he doing, he’s on the IL (used to be called DL), crazy. Christian Yelich is insane with four homers in four games, Yelich is looking for a MVP repeat, the fourth time in the NL. The Mets were stabbed in the back and then the knife got twisted in its back. They tied it up in the top of the eighth at 5-5 and then bottom of the ninth, bad choice on Mickey Callaway to keep in Chris Wilson in a tight game, Trea Turner hits a line drive walk-off home run. I know the Cardinals don’t look like a good team, but they’ve put together a nice lineup. Marcel Ozuna, Yadier (who’s getting old) Molina, Matt Carpenter, Paul Goldschmidt, Paul DeJong, Jedd Gyrko, Jose Martinez, Dexter Fowler and Kolten Wong. I see leadership, power, clutch and rookies, prove me wrong or add something. In the Dodgers blowout of the D-Backs, John Ryan Murphy was pitching, which I could understand because, you know, getting blown out, pitchers are tired, but Russell Wilson pitching for the Dodgers, who are winning 16-5, whaaaaaaaaaat? Yeah, true. Former Met Jay Bruce hit his first home run as a Mariner, making a smaller impact than some of the players on Opening Day. After a risky move starting Chris Davis, who hit 47 homers four years ago and 53 homers six years ago, strikes out three times on Opening day and then gets benched the second day. Remember he signed a 7 year/161 mil, 23 mil per year contract, so they’re stuck with them for four more years.

Opening Day 2019 minus 95 Days

With the Mets hiring a new GM, Brodie Van Waganen, they’re hungry for new players and consequentially getting better with the correct trades.

The Amazins’ made a smart move today in signing veteran catcher Wilson Ramos for a two-year deal. The thirty-one year old backstop posted 109 homers, a batting average of .273 and having 426 RBIs in his career.

A couple of weeks ago, the Boys from Queens made another good move in signing slugger Robinson Cano and lights-out closer Edwin Diaz.

The Mariners, on the other hand, are going to get STACKED, they got Jay Bruce, Anthony Swarzak, their #1 pick in the draft in Jarred Kelenic, Gerson Bautista and Justin Dunn. Cano will not produce as much as he did in his early career, but he will provide the hole in second base that the Mets could not fill and another experienced bat in the lineup.

Edwin Diaz is the spotlight in this trade because the Mets will destroy anyone with him late in the game.

In other news for the Mets – and yes, I will get to other teams too – their interest in Marlins star catcher, Realmuto remains real and they are seriously considering trading Syndergaard to the Yankees in a three-team deal. The Mets also want to sign DeGrom long term, the 30-year-old righty, who won the Cy Young award with a 1.70 ERA last season, which I think is a great thought.

So, now in other news, the Mariners are looking for new players because they traded the good players to the Mets. They landed Domingo Santana from the Brewers and now they have a great outfield, and well-rounded outfield – an outfield with Mitch Haniger, Jay Bruce and Mallex Smith is a great lineup. The Brewers landed Ben Gamel, the veteran right/left fielder is batting .269 with 13 homers in just three years which were cut short—all three of them. This is probably the biggest trade of the year and we definitely won’t see one like this one until the calendar turns the page to 2019.

The Dodgers landed Homer Bailey and a few prospects while the Reds got Matt Kemp, Yaisel Puig, Kyle Farmer and Alex Wood. An amazing deal.  I don’t know how Nick Krall managed that insane deal with the Dodgers, maybe Andrew Friedman was having a bad day, maybe he didn’t sleep at all that night.

The Cardinals got an amazing bullpen reinforcement in Andrew Miller, the outstanding lefty reliever who injured his elbow really badly during the season and he was out most of the season.  He still has 53 saves and a 3.98 career ERA. I think he will perform very, very well and will have his first taste of the National League.

Personally, I think pitching in the National League is much easier than in the American League, and one reason is that the American League has better hitter and the American League has the DH. It’s really your choice but you gotta face the facts some time.

While I’m writing this, I’m thinking that Yasiel Puig will actually look pretty good in a Cincinnati Reds uni.  The good closer Craig Kimbrel is still on the market somehow and I don’t know why. He’s a great closer and is completely cool even in the toughest situations. He is reportedly lowering his price so now maybe he will be sold a little faster.

The Padres are looking into signing Marcus Stroman to help their rotation. The young sparkplug righty had a injury-stricken 2018 season so he only pitched 19 games and posted an ugly 5.54 ERA over the season. The Padres already had a great infield with power hitters all over and a great infield coming up lead by Fernando Tatias Jr. But the Paders finalized the deal for the World Series winning second baseman to come west, Ian Kinsler. Kinsler had a season with 14 homers, a .240 batting average, second to lowest in his career and stole 16 bags with two teams. He’s the kind of guy who every team wants to have.

If Kinsler is reading this, do not and I repeat, DO NOT, take this personally. Kinsler is the kind of guy who doesn’t really make a difference to a team on the big picture, but if you look really closely, he has the speed, the amazing glove and has the pop to hit a few homers, so in my book, the perfect leadoff hitter. I read that the Dodgers made this deal just to make the outfield have only green grass, with Joc Pederson and Kike Hernandez grazing out there somewhere.

Harper wants a lot of money for someone to sign him, the worse the team the more the money, but for the Dodgers, Harper doesn’t want to say it. But everyone thinks he would fit best there, a team without Harper going to the World Series and losing, what will happen with Harper.

The Cubs are also looking for Harper but they don’t really have room unless they trade Schwarber, Heyward, Happ or Almora, one of the four and they got Harper.

While I was writing this, ESPN gave me a notification that the Mets signed Rajai Davis to a minor league contract and will hopefully get promoted to the majors sometime during the season. The veteran played 102 games and hit only 1 home run, power was never his strong suit, but he stole 21 bags and had a .224 average, so he didn’t have a great year last year. But we will all never forget that this is the man that hit the game-tying homer in Game 7.

The Mets signed another outfielder, Gregor Blanco from the Giants to another minor league contract, Gregor Blanco will be another guy that if someone gets injured, he’ll step in, if he’s playing well and the guy that’s injured comes back, Blanco will be hanging on by a thread, if he’s playing bad, he’ll get sent right back down.

The Mets have a great farm system, with Peter Alonso ready to get called up, next up is Andres Gimenez and Ronny Maurucio both shortstops who both performed well in ’18. Matt Harvey found a new home on Friday, Los Angeles, maybe he could set up a crime lab in LA and Robin will no longer be Robin, Robin will now be…… Seagull!!!!

Alfred will trade in the old tux for a swim suit, no, no, that doesn’t sound right, maybe one of those Hawaiian luau shirts, some shorts and flip flops. No longer Alfred Pennyworth, it’s Alfred Sunburnsworth.  His batterang will be a baseball now and his bat suit will be an Angels jersey.

Now, seriously, Daniel Murphy has signed with the Colorado Rockies for two years. Murphy was limited to only 91 games in 2018 due to injury. He was always a power hitter with a glove that needed work. He is excepted to play 1B there. Murphy will move Ian Desmond to center and that will shift the whole outfield a little.

To top it off, the Dodgers are expecting to make a Kluber trade, but this deal is being sidetracked by both teams, the players that being considered to be dealt is a bad idea, I think.

There are exciting things happening in the MLB in the countdown to Opening Day 2019.

It’s over.

The World Series is finally over (I know, finally) and if you didn’t hear your phone buzzzzzzing about it, I think you might live in a cave, the Red Sox won.

The World Series 2018 was really interesting.

The Dodgers came into this one obviously the underdogs facing the gruesome Red Sox who had an insanely strong year. The Bosox were used to the frigid cold but the kids from Capistrano Beach were definitely frigid to the bone and couldn’t hold on to the temperature nor their games, falling behind a pretty big deficit of 2:0.

They were then in hot LA, with the first game going to the Dodgers and it was one for the record books, twice the length of a regular game, 18 innings! With the sleepy Justin Turner slamming it outta here in the middle of the morning.

Then, with high hopes for the next game, the Dodgers lost again to the Sox, 9-6, a tough loss as the Dodgers tried to find some offense, but rather found the Red Sox team is out of this world. The Dodgers knew they were beat and probably everyone else knew that they were beat.

With a 3-1 series and the Red Sox winning, the Dodgers came onto the field, but the never-give-up attitude from Clayton Kershaw proved to be nothing compared to the champagne-ready Boston Red Sox. It was 5-1 with Manny Machado up at the plate, he swung on Sale’s menacing slider and then Machado walked the long way back to the dugout.

David Price allowed 3 hits and one run but Kersh could not hold on as the Boston Red Sox are the champagne-sprayed 2018 World Champions.

Overall, even though the Red Sox’s performance blew the doors off the season, I believe that the Dodgers could have done better, their pitching could have done better. I know their pitching isn’t the best but they did a lot better in the regular season. Rich Hill and Walker Buehler are the second and the third best on their staff (chef’s choice on which one is two and which one is three).

I think their hitting was the best it could be but the Sox pitching is the same level as the hitting of the Dodgers. The Red Sox hitting was fine, except I think they needed to hit more homers in the postseason. The Dodgers had the exact amount of homers that is healthy for them.

Overall, I think the biggest surprise was the Mets because they had such an amazing start and then they just crashed and really burned. Another big surprise were the Brewers and Dodgers, after an iffy start from the Brewers and a really bad start from the Dodgers they just came back bit us in the butt.

On the Eve of the 2018 World Series

With the postseason air crisp with nail-biting games, the teams are vigorously fighting for a spot in the 2018 World Series.

The Brewers made quick easy work of the Rockies sweeping them 3 games to none, no real action there.  In the other NLDS, the Braves put as much of a fight as they can against the literal powerhouse Dodgers, killing them 3-1.

Before the DSs started, I thought Francisco Lindor and the Indians would put up a fight against the ‘Stros, then they got destroyed 3-0, didn’t even try to try.

Then there was a legendary DS, Yankees vs. Red Sox, rivals for as long as time. The Sox were coming in with high hopes and a lot of confidence as they both put their aces out there and the Red Sox came out on top, next game the underdogs went out and beat the Sox. The Sox then went into beast mode and routed the Yanks, 16-1. Next game just to wrap it up in a nice gold ribbon, the Boston Red Sox won with a humble score of 4 to 3. The Red Sox could not be stopped, mowing through the Astros 4-1, with Jackie Bradley Jr. going full-on MVP, with 9 RBI in the whole CS.

With the great series of Dodgers and Brewers going into Game 7, they had a power-packed series. Through the first 4 games, it looked pretty even, with the last game going into 13 innings, whew! Then the Dodgers won a game, and it looked as if it was over, then, on their last breaths, the Crew got even. The Dodgers won a wild one which looked like it was in the Brewers’ favor since the Christian Yelich homer, then 5 of 5 of the Dodgers runs were scored via the homer.

See you on Tuesday when the 2018 World Series starts between the Red Sox and Dodgers – it’s going to be power packed and really electric. 

We’re in the Postseason

With the postseason already started, we have some very interesting games coming up. Yanks vs A’s was a game that was kind of lopsided the whole time.  Aaron Judge started the slugging with a first-inning two-run dinger against the inexperienced Liam Hendricks. I don’t what the A’s manager Bob Melvin was thinking before the game, maybe he was daydreaming, I really don’t know about starting the rook.

Then the bombers exploded, with 4 runs in the 6^th and Luke Voit tripled? Wait, whaaaaa? Must’ve been a few three-year-olds out there and maybe a five-year-old out in right. But then the homer leader hit another homer and gave the A’s the only runs that they got the whole game.

Then there was a Stantonian Blast, and that closed the doors with an iron lock.

The NL side wasn’t that much of a blowout. It was 1-0 with the Rockies in the lead until Javy “El Mago” Baez doubled home Terrance Gore and that put the Cubs karma in fifth gear that lasted them up until the 13^th,  no typo, actually the 13^th inning.

With two outs, Trevor Story, the young shortstop, probably nervous as ever, finds a hole, that gave way to the veteran Gerardo Parra, probably not so nervous, singles, now with, two men on, backup catcher Tony Wolters steps to the plate, Kyle Hendricks probably thought this was some sort of joke.

One=strike, Two=strike.

With two strikes on the catcher, who hasn’t had a hit since September 10^th, singles that give Colorado the lead, then Scott Oberg puts down Gore, Baez and Albert Almora on 14 pitches and the last one was quick work.

David Wright – Farewell!

It’s the start of the 2001 draft. The Mets have their eyes on a few players with David Wright being in the back of their minds.

They got Aaron Heilman, who had a massacred career, but, the Mets had a compensation pick.

Allan “Bud” Selig stepped up to the podium and said, “With the 38th pick of the 2001 Baseball Draft, the New York Mets select David Wright out of Hickory High School, the White Sox have the next pick.”

That was the start of one of the greatest dynasties in the history of the sport, which I will narrate to you.

On a hot afternoon in Queens, the Mets played the Expos, David Wright went 0-4 in his debut. The next day, July 22, he got his first two hits, one of them a double. Then, four games later, he took his first of many trips around the bases. Fast forward to the 2006 postseason, he goes 8-37 with four walks and a home run in the whole postseason which was all the way to the NLCS.

Then, maybe a little over a year later, his back started to conk out and he began his what seemed then to a be a never-ending injury stint.

David finally came back to hype up the Mets who had just got into the postseason. He went 10-54 with a homer and the team went all the way to World Series with the karma of their captain. Then after he played in two games in two years, and he finally comes out of the clasp of injury. He is cleared to go to St. Lucie to play in some games.

David finally returns to The Big Apple after more than a month in St. Lucie and Las Vegas. Then after about a week on the bench, he eagerly comes out of his dugout with a feeling that his gut might fail him, he swung at the first pitch he saw and hit a bullet to third.

On September 29, he finally makes a start at third, wait for it--batting third. Before the game, NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio made 9/29, “David Wright Day.”

Jose Reyes and David Wright are making their 895^th start together. A lot of things are happening. So, Wright steps up to the plate, with all of Citi Field, and probably a quarter of the Tri-State Area standing and cheering. You could see tension in David’s eyes. I actually heard fireworks in the background near our apartment. He draws a walk, then, he gets doubled up on a Conforto grounder. Then, a second at-bat, he pops out to the rookie first baseman in foul territory.

In a memorable stroll around the infield, David with tears in his eyes, waved to the fans for their support. He said he was ready to say thank you a million times to his fans. Mets fans rightfully cheered him today and throughout his illustrious career. He was the face of the Mets and baseball. He was the team captain and the poster boy of baseball.

David Wright had an outstanding career, he is and always will be my favorite player. Farewell, Captain America.

2018 Season Comes to an End

With the end of the regular season here, Christian Yelich is surging to the top of the MVP poll, Javy Baez must be pissed as heck. Javy Baez is still as amazing as ever, but Yelich is just too overpowering. Jacob deGrom left Aaron Nola and Max Scherzer in the dust so far away that it’s like they’re four year olds who just began to pitch.

DeGrom is first in ERA by .20 points, second in Pitcher’s WAR by .2. Here’s an interesting fact of deGrom that my gym teacher told me, if the Mets scored at least 3 runs every game that Jake started, he would be 30-0, that he would be a Cy Young winner, no doubt.

Blake Snell has been on top of everything in his Rookie Year, leading his division in Wins, ERA and WAR for pitchers. Mookie Betts is running away with everything, including the MVP honors. He leads his leads his league in runs, average, WAR, slugging percentage and extra base hits.

Khris Davis has been “kh-illing” the ball lately with 47 homers, and he just loves hitting the ball.

Chris Davis on the other hand has been a catastrophe. He can’t hit anything, but still he is one of the highest paid player in baseball.

David Wright will officially retire tonight. He is and always will be my favorite player. He pinch hit yesterday. He will be in the lineup playing 3B tonight as that is his final game in the bigs.

With 21 days left until the postseason or the second season as some say, the official 2018 baseball season is coming to an end.

JA Happ has always been a guy that you could lay your team on and depend on the veteran to start a game and finish strong and give the game to your bullpen. He was a great pitcher but he was on a team that had a mediocre offense with the Blue Jays but they somehow always picked him up with a very strong first season riding a 20-4 record. Then, the Jays faltered and Happ had a 10-11 record in 25 games. He picked it up himself with a 15-6 record so far this year, but with the Yanks, with a nuclear powered offense, he’s 5-0, clearly he could carry his own weight.

Eric Hosmer is a very good first baseman with power, some speed (at least more than most first basemen) and he is very good at flashing the leather around making stops that no one could make. He is very prone to putting the ball on the ground with 57% of the balls he put into play were grounders, thus producing 105 singles this year. His OPS is staggeringly low at .709 with his usual being .781. His Total Bases number is really big for only three weeks off the end of the season and he only played 138 games. Though he is a four-time Gold Glover he has four errors at first this year. If he hadn’t had a below mediocre season he would’ve had a spot at least 15 spots before this.

Robbie Ray is always such a dark horse; no one ever realizes his potential, he just flies under the radar. Robbie Ray set down 218 hitters in 162 innings. Hitters made contact 68% of the time only past Cy Young winners who have gotten less contact rates. Don’t forget that he had a 15-5 record last year and that was his emerging year. Now that the Diamondbacks are most likely going to the playoffs, Robbie is going to be a big piece in their winning games against tough opponents. He has a great defense behind him, so any ground ball or tough fly is 65% of the time caught. He has developed a wicked curveball that could easily fool even the toughest hitters. He should be a couple of spots higher because he’s not really Cy Young caliber goods.

Odubel “Torito” Herrera is a five-tool player no matter what kind of stats you give me. He has a heck of a lot of power, and he’s right up there behind Charlie Blackmon as one of the best centerfielders in the game. He’s one of the fastest in the NL East with Amed Rosario and Trea Turner. The only weak spot that he has is average hitting as he’s batting .264 but that’s still better than most centerfielders. But, he’s kind of lazy, like he doesn’t run out grounders and he watches strikes go by and swings at balls and he’s kind of annoying and irritating to his teammates and to opponents. He’s going to have a high WAR this year because earlier in the year he was the only good player there, but then came all sorts of sluggers from all sorts of teams. His arm is an item that I rather not talk about, it’s kind of a painful subject. He should be placed a lot higher up because he’s very good.

Todd Frazier has such a good resume that no one really sees how unreliable he is, yeah, he could hit dingers, and his glove is okay, but outside of that, he’s bad. He can’t hit for average, he can’t run. His arm is horrible when he trying to make a tough throw. His hits have always been low. His SLG is down as is his OBP. He won’t make it to any other team because no team wants him. But power is a big point in today’s game and he’s already slugged 17 dingers, even if he was out for about a little more for a month. He hasn’t been getting his doubles but I think he’s about to get on a hot streak. His WAR is 2.3 so obviously the Mets put him as a starter but nothing more. He should, I think, stay where he is.

The rookie pitcher that the Royals acquired in a trade is Mike Moustakas. So, he made his major league debut with no apparent high hopes. He then took a perfecto into the eighth, he walked a guy and then Robbie Grossman singled. Best wishes to him.

J.D. Martinez is one of the best all round-players in the game though he can’t run, can’t field and has a horrible arm. But, his hitting is amazing, in baseball, he has the second highest average, he’s second in dingers and he drives in runners like there’s no tomorrow. There was a rally squirrel, yes, a rally squirrel in the Cardinals-Tigers game, the squirrel came onto the field and the Cardinals scored some runs. A similar thing happened last year when a cat came onto the field and Yadier Molina then hit a grand slam.

We all know that Ender Inciarte is not a home run hitter, he is a Gold Glover that steals a heck of a lot of bases. So, in a recent game he hit a three-run homer that won the game in the end. Maybe this is the beginning of a new Ender.

Congratulations to Jose Ramirez on reaching the 30-30 club. He stole his 30^th bag against the Toronto Blue Jays but sadly they lost. Jose is a sparkplug for the Indians and so solid everywhere, with their pitching and their amazing hitting, that’s the kind of stuff you need to get into the postseason. Ronald Acuna Jr. has turned heads once again, now being only the sixth player in baseball history to have 25+ homers before turning 21.

The Mets are finally watchable again. They’ve been on winning streaks snapped by only one loss at a time. Jay Bruce is back, Noah Syndergaard pitched his first complete game against the Giants, Jacob DeGrom has made his Cy Young case even stronger. Probably the best news is David Wright he has joined the team and is now playing in simulated games and will hope to join the team as a player later this week. And to top it off, this bat flip is amazing, Park Suk-Min is in the Korean league and he did a no-look behind the back bat flip, but, it wasn’t a home run, it was a RBI single.

Around the MLB Ballparks

Wilson Contreras is still a youngster, he doesn’t play a full 162 games a year as Victor Caratini has squeezed in for 48 games this year but, I’m not saying Vic is bad, but ya know, Contreras: An arm that the government classified as a weapon, 25+ homer power. Vic: Has an arm, but doesn’t have a homer yet. He has a tool that most catchers don’t have: speed, he could steal five or six a year and hit one or two triples. (At least the ones who stand at 6’1” 210 lb. and has a lot of muscle, he’s fast) He was an All-Star this year, didn’t do much at the game but it was his first All-Star selection. He has a prosperous future ahead of him and the Cubs have so many good sluggers in Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo, Contreras is a very nice surprise and could lead them to the World Series, but, that prediction is a longshot, but they have a shot.

Matt Carpenter is a beast all of a sudden, he could launch missiles for homers and he’s a wait, leadoff man? Yeah, he’s a leadoff man, and he’s leading the NL in homers with 33. He has the occasional burst of speed but the Cards need a good dependable player at every position and that’s where Carpenter comes in. He is an old-school guy who loves slapping the ball the other way for doubles and he adores the long ball. I think he should have gotten the All-Star selection that was a HUGE snub, the second worst snub was Brandon Nimmo. Right now, he is leading the NL in SLG%, OPS, OPS+ and Total Bases. He is on pace for about a career-high, 5.2 WAR and he’s going for a career season. I think he might be in the mix for MVP. He should be ranked higher if the people who did this had a mid season one too.

Lance Lynn is a lost player and he somehow got onto the Twins. He started with the Twins as a guy who could get the job done, even becoming an All-Star in 2012. But, he always allowed a lot of hits but could get some easy outs, bu-u-ut, he would get pulled from games kind of early. Never being the guy to give the bullpen an off day. He was a back of the rotation guy though he was drafted in the first round. He was majorly setback due to Tommy John surgery in 2016 that took away the only heat that he had. He’s made about 30 starts each of his years in the bigs. He is one of those pitchers like Steven Matz that he keeps allowing heaps of runs and no one really talked about him, until he took the mound, you forgot that he’s even there. He never finished with an ERA more than 3.97, but in all of this, the Mets could use him and they could gladly fire Vargas. The Yanks picked him up though and gave him second life, but he is still good enough to get placed in the Top 100.

David Price has been the pitcher the Red Sox traded for three years ago. He has been on fire over his last seven start with a 1.50 ERA with 48 Ks and only allowed eight runs. He always had that wicked slider but his legendary pitch is the fastball to get easy outs such as groundouts or to throw strike three to an unsuspecting batter. Now that Sale is on the DL, he has gotta lead this rotation. His walks is at a normal number but his Ks are up. He likes to pitch up and in to lefties and up and away to rights at a slower speed. He led the Sox to their 90th win. His career has shown the way to the Hall of Fame, but the last year or so really slowed his performance down, now as he’s picking it up, he might have a chance to make a go for a late-in-the-career Cy Young and maybe even into the Hall of Fame.  

J.T. Realmuto is a piece that everyone wanted, he’s statistically the fastest catcher in the game and has added a lot of pop to his resume and that helps because the Marlins officially have no power whatsoever, they traded Justin Bour away to the Phillies and that’s all. He’s gotten 16 homers and 62 RBIs. He had 17 homers all last year and he’s already gotten 16. He was an All-Star this year and he is on pace for a career year in walks, homers, RBIs, runs and double. J.T. already has career highs in SLG, OBP and OPS. He is, I would say one of the best framers in baseball. He is also on pace to a career low in double plays. His WAR should finish around 5.2, as he is leading the Marlins. He should have a higher spot, but, strangely enough, I don’t blame the writers who wrote this mess, because, looking at his number the past few years, he deserves that spot.

The Phillies are aquiring like nuts, I mean, like NUTS!!!!!!! They’ve got Wilson Ramos, Asdrubal Cabrera, Jose Bautista and Justin Bour, that’s 63 round-trippers just this season. Add that to Odubel Herrera, Maikel Franco, Carlos Santana and Rhys Hoskins and you get 151 homers, and you’ve got yourself 8 men who could rip the seaming off the balls, plus the pitcher, and you have a lineup. Aaron Judge is now recovering slowly from his injury after he got hit in the hand but has still not begun swinging a bat but is practicing base running drills. It’s official, the MLB has hit the most walk-offs in a single year with 81, after Tyler White’s walk-off homer, we broke the record set in 2004. Jose Ramirez and Francisco Lindor were the only the second duo on the left side of the infield to have 20 homers and 20 bags in his pocket since Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez. Speaking of Derek Jeter, I was looking through his Baseball Reference page, I saw that he was second in MVP voting. I thought, “Who could have won when Jeter had such a phenomenal year? It was some guy named Justin Morneau, he had a nice year, slugging 34 dingers, driving in 130 steaks, with a .321 average. Captain America will join the Mets in San Francisco but will still continue rehab for few days. Maybe the Mets could go for a late miracle run to the Wild Card and Wright will be a godsend. There was a kid at the Dodgers-Rangers game who caught (more like dived for) Cody Bellinger’s and Manny Machado’s dingers, wow, what a day, that kid had his eyes on the prize(s). Amed Rosario has been a leadoff hitter as good a Whit Meffifield, and Whit may not be a realllllly good player, but he’s up there on the best leadoff men in the game. His breakout has been the best surprise of the Mets’ 2018 season (besides the 11-1 start) He is already the best pure hitter of the Mets in my book, the fastest runner by 0.9 ft/sec with second being Brandon Nimmo. Justus Sheffield will be in the Arizona Fall League joined by Andres Gimenez and Peter Alonso. My personal favorite was Joey Gallo as Pico de Gallo. Congratulations to Hawaii for bringing down South Korea in the Little League World Series. And too top it off, the Arizona Diamondbacks are the best defensive team, I think, ever. Every player is in the top 5 in his position. The Rockies are also really good defensively but the Diamondbacks have like chips in their hand and in their gloves too that lead the hand to the ball, crazy good.  

The Rockies have a solid infield with DJ Lemahieu, Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story. Their outfield missiles in Carlos Gonzalez’ arm and Gerardo Parra and Charlie Blackman could catch anything. They’re both in the NL West, and I can’t wait to see Arizona’s defense in the playoffs.
